Skincare is one of the best product categories to sell online. Customers buy again when a product works for them, a single routine can mean several products in one order, and a clean, honest brand story goes a long way. But a skincare store also has to do more than a normal shop. It has to explain ingredients, help people pick the right product for their skin, and earn trust before anyone puts a cream on their face.

In this guide I walk through how to build a skincare store on Shopify step by step. I use Bee Naturals as the example throughout. It is a skincare brand whose Shopify store I designed and built, so every step comes from a real project.

The Real Example: Bee Naturals

Bee Naturals sells skincare made with botanical oils, beeswax, honey, glycerin and antioxidants. The range covers eye care, serums, moisturizers and creams, cleansers, blemish treatments, body care, nail and cuticle care and a tinted facial primer. Products include the Queen Bee Peeper Keeper Eye Balm, a 6% Niacinamide Complex Serum, Miracle Skin Crème and Radiant Glow Body Butter.

A catalogue like this raises the same questions every skincare brand faces:

The steps below answer each of these.

Step 1: Plan Your Collections Around How Customers Shop

Before touching the theme, decide how your products are grouped. In Shopify these groups are called collections, and they become your menu, your filters and many of your landing pages.

For skincare, the most useful grouping is by product type or area of the body, because that is how people search. Bee Naturals uses categories like these:

CollectionExample products
Eye CareEye balm
SerumsNiacinamide serum
Moisturizers & CreamsDay crème, night repair crème
CleansersGel cleanser, facial wash with AHA & BHA
Blemish & Acne CareBlemish lotion, spot treatment
Body CareBody butter
Nail & Cuticle CareNail and cuticle oil

Use automated collections where you can. For example, set a condition like "product type is Serum" and every new serum joins that collection on its own. You can also add a few collections based on needs, such as "Dry Skin" or "Day Routine", using product tags.

Tip: keep the main menu short. Five to seven clear categories work better than fifteen. Extra groupings can live in the footer or on the shop page as filters.

Step 2: Choose a Theme and Set Up Your Brand

Pick an Online Store 2.0 theme. These themes let you add and rearrange sections on every page from the theme editor, which you will use a lot. Shopify's free Dawn theme is a solid, fast starting point, and paid themes from the Shopify Theme Store add more ready-made layouts.

Then set up the brand in Theme settings:

Step 3: Add Products the Right Way

Product pages sell the product, so this step deserves the most care.

Write clear product titles

Put the product type and the key ingredient in the title. "6% Niacinamide Complex Serum" tells the customer, and Google, exactly what it is. A name like "Glow Drops" on its own does not.

Use variants for sizes

If a product comes in more than one size, add the sizes as variants of one product rather than separate products. Shopify then shows a price range on collection pages, such as "From $10", which you can see on Bee Naturals products like the Radiant Glow Body Butter and Rejuvenating Gel Cleanser. Reviews and sales history also stay together on one product.

Use "Compare at price" for offers

To show a sale, fill in the Compare at price field with the original price. Most themes then show the old price crossed out next to the new one, as Bee Naturals does across its range. You can also show a "Save %" badge with a few lines of Liquid:

{% if product.compare_at_price > product.price %}
  {% assign diff = product.compare_at_price | minus: product.price %}
  {% assign saving = diff | times: 100 | divided_by: product.compare_at_price %}
  <span class="badge-sale">Save {{ saving }}%</span>
{% endif %}

Write descriptions that answer real questions

A good skincare description answers four things: what it does, who it is for, how to use it, and what is in it. Short paragraphs and bullet points work better than one long block of text.

Step 4: Show Ingredients and How to Use with Metafields

Skincare product page layout with ingredients, how to use and add to cart sections
Ingredients and usage in their own tabs keep the product page clean.

Skincare customers read ingredient lists. Instead of pasting them into the main description, store them in metafields. These are extra fields you add to every product.

  1. Go to Settings → Custom data → Products and add definitions such as Ingredients, How to use and Skin type.
  2. Fill them in on each product page in the admin.
  3. Show them on the product template. In most 2.0 themes you can add a Collapsible tab block and connect it to the metafield without code.

If your theme does not offer that option, a small snippet in the product section does the job:

{% if product.metafields.custom.ingredients != blank %}
  <details class="product-tab">
    <summary>Key Ingredients</summary>
    {{ product.metafields.custom.ingredients | metafield_tag }}
  </details>
{% endif %}

Every product now shows its ingredients in the same place, and adding a new product is just filling in the fields.

Step 5: Build a Home Page That Tells the Brand Story

Your home page has two jobs: explain why your brand is different, and get visitors into the products quickly. On Bee Naturals the home page is built from these sections:

The routine sections matter most. Most visitors do not arrive knowing they need a cleanser, a serum and a night crème. Showing a complete routine turns a one-product visit into a bigger order, and it gives first-time buyers confidence about where to start.

Tip: build these as custom sections with blocks, so the store owner can change the routine, swap products or update the text from the theme editor without asking a developer.

Step 6: Build Trust Before the First Order

People are careful about what they put on their skin, so trust is part of the design, not an add-on.

Step 7: Keep the Store Fast and Ready for Google

Skincare stores are full of large, beautiful photos, which can make pages slow. A few habits keep things quick:

Step 8: Set Up Payments, Shipping and Launch

Before going live, run through this checklist:

  1. Set up a payment provider and place a real test order.
  2. Create shipping rates for every country you sell to.
  3. Check taxes and the currency your prices are shown in.
  4. Test the full store on a phone. Most skincare shoppers browse on mobile.
  5. Connect your domain and submit your sitemap in Google Search Console.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Shopify good for a skincare brand?

Yes. Shopify handles products with sizes, sale prices, reviews, subscriptions through apps, and payments in one place, and it scales from a small natural brand to a large catalogue.

Do I need a developer to build a skincare store?

You can launch a simple store yourself with a free theme. A developer helps when you want custom sections like routines, ingredient tabs, a unique design, or a store that loads faster.

How long does it take to build a skincare store on Shopify?

It depends on the number of products and how custom the design is. Product photos and descriptions usually take the most time, so have them ready before the build starts.

How should I show ingredients on product pages?

Store them in a product metafield and show them in a collapsible tab on the product page. Every product then follows the same layout and is easy to update.

Final Thoughts

A good skincare store is more than a product grid. Plan collections around how people shop, give every product clear titles, sizes and ingredients, guide visitors through routines, and earn trust with reviews and honest information. That is the approach behind Bee Naturals, and it works for any beauty or skincare brand starting on Shopify.
